Before I came to Italy, I made Noelle a Halloween costume. I purchased the supplies and formulated a plan before I told Justin because I knew he would say bringing a Halloween costume to Italy for one day of festivities is ridiculous. My mother in law supplied the solution: make the costume double as PJs so she can continue to wear it after Halloween. Justin couldn’t say no once he had seen what I created. Our little girl was going to be the cutest and fuzziest baby bunny in the world.
Noelle donned the costume when we went out for dinner with the two other Fulbrighters in Naples. More than a couple of pictures were requested as we made our way downtown. She even got a smooch on the cheek from a little girl who had been told by her mother not to touch the baby with her hands.
Halloween is not a particularly popular holiday here, but it is recognized and celebrated to some extent. We saw lots of little kids dressed up and out with their parents. A couple of local businesses held parties that drew considerable crowds. On the other hand, when Justin offered some costumed kids in our apartment building some candy, they seemed pretty confused and did not accept. I guess they don’t teach their kids to accept candy from strangers here, even on Halloween.
